Buckwheat honey is found primarily in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, where it is known and loved as a strong varietal honey with a very distinctive aroma. The honey's aroma is very distinctive and easily recognizable: rustic and intense, reminiscent of leather and barnyards, with fresh menthol aromas on the palate.
The flowers of the buckwheat plant open early in the morning and close again around 3:00 p.m. Each flower opens for only one day, and nectar secretion lasts one to four hours. However, since there are up to 1,800 flowers on one plant, buckwheat is still a good source of nectar for bees.
